Field guide

Financial data providers, marketplaces and directories

Understand where Finnhub, FactSet, FinancialData.Net, Datarade and Find My Moat fit when choosing a financial-data source.

The short answer

A provider supplies a data service, a marketplace helps you source suppliers, and a directory helps you discover tools. Keyword overlap can surface all three. Evaluate the underlying dataset and delivery contract rather than assuming every search competitor is an interchangeable API.

Search competitors can serve different jobs

A search for financial data can return a direct API, an institutional platform, a marketplace or an editorial directory. They can overlap in search results while supplying different things to a user. Ask who delivers the actual dataset, how it is accessed and which agreement covers its use.

A marketplace helps you source a supplier

Datarade describes a marketplace where providers publish their products and connect with buyers. A marketplace result is a lead to a dataset or supplier, not proof that every listed product shares one API schema or license. Inspect the particular product, ask for a representative sample and identify who operates delivery.

For a directory such as Find My Moat, use categories and comparisons to build a shortlist. Then open each shortlisted tool’s own documentation. The directory’s search visibility does not establish the underlying service’s issuer coverage or suitability for your task.

Ask the same questions of the actual supplier

  1. Which reporting entities and instruments are covered, and how are identifiers mapped?
  2. Which periods and fields are available under the actual access plan?
  3. Can a value be traced to an original source, with units and report version retained?
  4. Is the required data current, historical, revised or point-in-time?
  5. What interface, operational support and usage rights does the intended application require?

Try a complete record, a missing period and a genuinely unsupported case. Record what happens instead of converting every failure into an empty array.

Build a shortlist around one research question

For a first European company question, start with the source-selection guide. Use the provider comparisons for narrower questions rather than treating every service here as a direct replacement for every other one.

Our public ASML, SAP and LVMH examples are small, dated demonstrations. They can help you inspect a method, but they do not establish a complete financial database, current prices or a universal right to redistribute source data.
